Fire Pits
The Recreation District has two fire pits available for public use throughout the year. One is in John Griffin Regional Park near the Sells Avenue Trailhead and the other is just east of the Fishing Pond at Pathfinder Regional Park. There is no fee for using either fire pit. The applicant must agree to all terms and conditions of this Permit, which are integral to the District’s permission for such use. You may either download the permit on this page or stop by our offices at 575 Ash Street in Cañon City to pick one up.
The fire pit in John Griffin Regional Park is named after Brandt Bradbury and built in conjunction with the family of Brandt Bradbury, the Cañon City Area Fire Protection District, and the Cañon City Area Recreation and Park District.
Below are the requirements for use of the fire pits:
1. Only natural wood shall be burned. TRASH, CHARCOAL, DIMENSIONAL CUT LUMBER, PLASTICS, or LIQUID FUELS are prohibited from use in the fire pits.
2. At no time shall any vegetation in the park be used as fuel for the fire pit.
3. Wood fuel shall remain within the width and height of the fire pit enclosure.
4. Kindling of the fire is subject to permission granted by the local fire department authority having jurisdiction, based on weather and conditions on the date and time of the intended use.
5. The Applicant shall contact the appropriate Fire District PRIOR to commencing any fire, to obtain permission at the time of the fire. The Applicant shall provide the Fire District with the location, intended extinguish time, responsible party’s phone number, and burn permit number (if applicable). The phone number for the appropriate fire district is listed above.
6. Applicant must provide their own fire suppressant. This shall be a minimum of either 5-gallons of water secured and readily available, or a 2A:10 B,C rated fire extinguisher.
7. The Applicant attending shall have a phone to dial 911 in the event of an emergency.
8. Applicant must tend the fire at all times and may not leave until the fire is completely out.
9. All schedules are subject to change, and the District, or the local fire department has the right to cancel the use of the fire pit at any time. This is at the discretion of the Executive Director, Parks Supervisor, or the fire department. Under no circumstances shall such a change entitle Applicant to any claim of damages.
10. Applicant shall be held liable for any damage to District property or equipment or loss of the same is such damage or loss occurs while Applicant is using facilities of the District. Applicant additionally agrees to indemnify and hold harmless the District from any and all liability, loss or damage District may suffer as a result of claims, demands, costs or judgments including reasonable attorney fees arising from Applicant’s use of the above-mentioned facilities.
11. Any payment on damages is due within one-week of use.
12. If the JGRP fire pit is being used, the District will unlock the fire pit for use.
13. Notwithstanding the terms of this Permit, use of the fire pits is subject to the ultimate approval by the Executive Director or his designee, and the local fire department.
