Accessibility Open House

Event: Accessibility Open House on Nov 14, 2026, in Cañon City. Try track chairs, share input on outdoor accessibility, and volunteer!

The Bighorn Roundtable will host a community open house on Saturday, November 14, 2026, in the Cañon City Area Recreation and Park District's Community Room at 575 Ash Street in Cañon City.  The open house will address community needs related to access to outdoor recreation.  The Bighorn Roundtable represents government agencies, non-profits, and user groups in Fremont County.  Their goal is to improve recreational opportunities through collaboration.

Accessibility is a broad term and, in recreation, it affects many people in any community.  Some think it's only about creating access for wheelchair users, but it's much more.  It also means providing recreation opportunities for someone on oxygen, someone with bad joints who wants to be on a trail again, someone with poor vision, or anyone facing a physical obstacle that makes their ability to recreate different from others.  This open house will address all of this.

At the Accessibility Open House, community members can share input on accessibility needs and how to get involved.  Track Chairs and Terrain Hoppers will be available to test drive for wheelchair users and for those who may not need a wheelchair but can no longer physically enjoy a trail walk.  A local ADA and accessibility consultant will be available to share information on accessibility and improvements made over the years.  A booth will be available for you to provide feedback to the Bighorn Roundtable on areas where accessibility should be addressed.  We will also have a table where you can learn about volunteer opportunities and discuss funding for accessibility projects.

The Accessibility Open House will be held from 10 am to 1 pm on Saturday, November 14th, in the Community Room at the Cañon City Area Recreation and Park District, 575 Ash Street, Cañon City.  Please join us to learn more about outdoor recreation accessibility and provide your thoughts.
